Q: Who makes the best new construction windows?
A: My husband is a builder, and he’s a devoted Andersen window guy. He has installed Pella, but he feels that the quality of the trim they provide is lacking.
Q: What brand of double hung windows is best for new construction?
A: Pella and Anderson are the best. They are also the most expensive.
Q: New construction double hung windows?
Here’s the deal, I just bought a dump on the south shore of Long Island NY. It’s on a canal of the Great South Bay and I have to replace the existing windows because they’re shot. Once I opened the walls I found the water damage was extensive and had already rotted out the sheathing and some framing. I have to re-frame, re-sheathe and replace the windows. I used Andersons in my old house and have always been partial to them but have been hearing things about some other companies. Looking to hear from contractors/builders/window guys on what, in their opinion, would be the best new construction double hung window to use in a house on the water. I would also like to add that I’m a working guy and can’t afford 2K a window or some crazy thing. If you have a round about of what I could expect to pay for a standard 3X4 I’d appreciate it. Was gonna use Windowrama unless I get some better ideas.
Thanks
A: Stick with the Anderson If you are happy with them
Q: who makes the best double hung windows?
We need two new construction windows to replace one large picture window. Who makes the best double hungs? We live in the North East.
Thanks,
Happy Father’s Day
A: I don’t know how you determine the best, but if you are looking for insulated energy efficient windows, I would suggest that you look at Solace windows. Here is a link:

Q: Patching plaster around new windows?
Hi,
I live in an old bungalow. We recently took out all of the old windows and put new construction windows in. Some of the plaster around the new frame needs to be fixed so we can trim over it.
What is the best way to do it? Also, there were a couple of windows that we closed off. I need to make the new wall match the old wall. Can I marry drywall to plaster?
Thanks!
Daisy
A: Can I marry drywall to plaster? Yes, if you can see the windows studs just cut a strip of drywall to fit into the space between the window and old plaster (nail/screw to studs), peel the paper off the strips before fixing so as the mud (dry set mortar) will take easier, you need not finish to the window because the trimming will cover 2″ or 3″ depending on the width of your trim.
Or you could use something like this if it would work with your windows. http://www.faststud.net.au/pdfs/usa/EZY-REVEAL-EZY-CAP%20BROCHURE.pdf
Q: What’s the best way to learn carpentry/construction skills needed for home maintenance/improvement?
I am a homeowner and would like to improve my carpentry/construction skills. I am a teacher and have the summers off, which I would like to spend improving my house. This isn’t just to save money; I really want to learn how to do it.
I once converted a garage into a sculpture studio, so I have some skills/successes (can build a wall, install new windows and doors, wiring, put in a floor) and some failures (leaking skylights). I’ve also put in fences, built bookshelves and done some plumbing. Plus sculpture!
I know I could take classes at a tech school, but I’m looking for other hands-on ideas where I could learn from someone. Books are great but I need to SEE it and be able to ask questions. Though I have the summers off, they are short and I have young kids. I’d like to work a bit for someone for free in exchange for the teaching – is that feasible? I’m not incompetant, but I am female
A: call your local habitat for humanity…… they could always use a free hand…….or visit some local construction sites…..
to bad you don’t live in Alabama i could always use a FREE hand at my plumbing company………
best wishes
Q: Color question for new construction home?
Red brick house, beige vinyl with white trim and white window casements. What color of shutters would look best?
My roof is black, I don’t know about the front door color yet either.
A: What color is your front door? I like green or black with that scenario, but without seeing it’s hard to say. Hope this helps.
EDIT: With the black roof, go with a black door and shutters. That will look very classy.
Q: what is the best way to advertise my construction business on line?
we install new kitchens and bathrooms also replace wooden & tile floors, instulation of windows & any type of alterations & room conversion wright down to sheetrock- molding-painting-water proofing-pressure washing-cement-brick-stucco & design- licensed in nyc-nassau-suffolk county
A: Google, yahoo also. My husband owns a biz and that’s where his money is best spent.
Oh…Superpages is used a lot too
Q: Are You A Window Guy?
Putting new construction double hung windows into a house on the water, anyone know what the best window is?? I’m looking for something at a reasonable cost, can’t spend $1,000 a window.
Thanks
A: Andersen, Pella, Marvin, and Hurd, are all excellent brands. For preference, I would recommend them in the order listed.
They all have their own quirks, (Andersen having the least)
Depending on your exposure, I would recommend low E, or even, and/ or “sunglass”.
I do not know what size windows you are planning on using, but obviously the more square footage, the more costly. If you have a big area that you want to fill with glass… you might want to consider “mulling” two or more smaller units together, rather than one large, (read expensive) unit.
Andersens’ weather, wind and rain intrusion tests are the most impressive. I believe they guarantee no leakage up to 135 mph winds.
Again back to cost, depending on the sizing, and options of glazing, you may need to spend $1,000/ window, BUT a standard 3-0X5-0 low E andersen costs about $300
Q: We’re trying to sell an unfinished building. What advice do you have?
We bought a condemned in-town house, gutted it, and restored it to the point where all the prep work is done. New doors, new windows, 6 steel I-beams in cellar, new reinforced construction. Present condition is an empty 1500 sq ft building which could be two townhouse apartments, containing only subflooring and stud walls. (No insulation, no wiring, no plumbing) Any thoughts on how to attract the next best owner? It is zoned commercial and residential.
A: Hire a great Realtor with commercial lofts experience. Interview a couple and don’t take the one that says your place is worth the highest. If you contact me I can pre interview for you and refer to you the ones I think you should talk to. This will save you hours of work. <<<
Q: What should I do with my baseboards? I recently moved into a new construction with all builder basics.?
In my home the baseboards, window and door framing are not stained or painted. I think staining them will give them the best look, but I am not sure. They are glued to the drywall so I cannot remove them. They are cedar and stain grade. I started testing out stain in the bathroom, and it looks good, but I cannot keep it off of the walls, floor and windows. I do not want to create one hundred other projects as a result of this one. I have tried sliding paper in that works where it fits. Painting tape does not seem to keep the stain out. Also, when I am pulling up the painters tape, it is removing the paint from the walls! What should I do, any advice is helpful.
A: a thin piece of plastic or mylar 3inches wider or wider put tape on top and slide the plastic down the wall to where it meets the baseboard plastic has to be a little stiff
Q: Replacement windows…is this worth it?
This May we are having replacement windows installed in our home. The company that’s doing our 10 double-hung windows gave us a quote today on replacing our large front floor-to-ceiling bay window. (This window, by the way, is original – it was built with the house in the ’40’s.) $1,700 for 2 panes of tempered glass, new muttons and framework, and aluminum capping on the outside. My question pertains to something another company we received a quote from told us: that we’d need to have the entire thing ripped out and re-installed (i.e. – new construction). Their estimate, of course, was more than double the one we got today. What’s the best way to go? Can this type of window be replaced, or do we really need to save up for an entirely new structure? We don’t plan on living in this house for the next 30 years, but I would like for the job to be done right. Thanks.
A: You can have custom fit retrofit windows made. That is probably what the first company is going with, it’s smarter and cost effective.
Some people like to do things the hard way.
Q: i want to build a second floor on my parents house using cad?
ok well before you start telling me, you dont know what your getting youself into, i have no problem inversting time into this, i am good with computers, programs and drawing stuff. I have done windows, roofs, built an entire garage, electrical, insulation, drywall.
I may not know technical terms for building, but I know where I need to make things strong and stuff like that.
I know I need to also check for structural damage, and strength. Its basicly going to have 3 extra rooms ontop, each with its own closet. Of course electrical outlets I know have codes, so i will research this when i am closer to starting this project.
i went to my city hall, and asked what i needed for the permit, they said blueprints of old construction, and new construction. So i hope CAD can produce this for me. He didn’t say if he needed an engineer anything like that. But i did replace the windows this summer and all i did was etched my old window frame look, and etched a new frame with new window and he accepted it. He said it was unnesessary to come by check, and I got the permit.(my first permit ever)
so, besides the studying CAD books, and a class or two(or HOW MANY DO I NEED).
I guess the best question to this is, how would be the best way to get going on this, I’d like to save money, and I can do drawing, design and stuff. Is there like a rent-a-engineer website or place where I can just take my blueprints to get checked and be charged less? For construction, I really do believe I can do this, I got people that can help me build. I mean with CAD it pretty much tells me what, how, where to do what doesn’t it?
My influence, about 7 years ago my front door neighbor(a retired engineer) Built his own second floor, I helped him, and it didn’t seem to hard at all, he had permit and everything, of course he did most of the brain work, but it didn’t seem like anything out of this world. He is now gone, so I cant ask him for help, so im turning to yahoo, and just well asking for getting pointers and some answers.
Overall question, can I do this?? How much would I save?? Can I take my blueprints and have them checked??
Labor won’t be a problem, I am patient and good at working, and I get summers off since I am a student. And id be able to get some help from friends.
A: Go ahead and make your plans, and submit them when you apply for your permit. If anything is not up to your local building codes, your local authorities will revise them for you.
It’s what they do.
Q: computer for games, need help?
I am looking at replacing my old compouter with a newer one. I do play a lot of games, including most of the valve games, like portal and l4d2, as well as others like ut3 and the new avp.
now, here is the question-i’m getting fed up with how often vista on my computer crashes, corrupts my game files, overwrites my documents, and all that stuff. I usually build my compouter from parts. would I be better off with windows 7 on a new construction computer, or maybe try something new, like the beowulf-type supercomputers (they are several computers linked through a gigabit switch and a software protocall), or maybe just forget windows and all of its crashes and issues, and just get a mac?
not trying to start the pc vs mac wars, just which might be the best/most reliable for games and work?
it isn’t just the OS, the parts in this comp. are having issues. and most of my games are win/mac compatible.
A: Wouldn’t it be smarter to see if there are Mac versions of the games you want to play BEFORE you start debating on whether or not you want to buy one? Sure, you could build a beowulf cluster, but then you are running Linux… and you would need to know if there are Linux versions of the games you want to play before you built a Linux machine.
Windows 7 is more stable than Vista… this is why Windows 7 was brought out so soon after Vista. However, you can still purchase XP in both 32 bit and 64 bit flavors at Newegg.com. So, there is no need for you to build a new machine, if your old machine just needs a new Operating System.
But, if you are just looking to use Vista as an excuse to build a new machine, then nothing anyone says is going to sway you.
If you want to build a new machine, then build a new machine. But replacing an OS is a simple thing.
end of line
Q: Home Renovation Project – Best bang for the buck?
Home Renovation Project – Best bang for the bung?
I have a question to see what the general consenus is for the best bang for the buck on a couple projects. The project costs are estimates and I know there are other variables which can effect which project to do, but like to know what the best guess is. All projects are of equal value to me. Home is located in Milwaukee, WI suburb. Most homeowners in the subdivision are young couples or families with children in early teens.
Subdivision specs (median)
Sale Price = $290K
Year Built = 1996
Square Footage = 2,100
Lot Size = .33 acre
Baths = 2.5
Garage = 2
My Home Specs
Appraised = $300K
Year Built = 1995
Square Footage = 2,000
Lot Size = .33 acre
Baths = 2
Garage = 2
Project 1 = Construct 3rd Car Garage / Cost = $10,000
- Currently no shed in yard
- Roof modifcations are needed
- Garage would be within 4-5ft of lot line
- There is space to park in driveway
- Space in current garage is very limited (riding mower and/or two stage snowthrower would not fit)
Project 2 = Add half bath on 1st level / Cost = $15,000
- Push out closet / exterior wall (there is room under overhang of porch so no roof modifications needed)
- Add basic 0.5 bath on 1st level
- Eat in kitchen is off main entry so a new closet (for shoes and coats) can be contructed within the room (no aethtic issues, just take up ~12 sq.ft in a 200 sq. ft kitchen and is directly around the corner from the main entry).
- Now that there is a 0.5 bath on the lower level we can wall off the dual entry master and add a second vanity (currently used as the master bath and 1st level bath),
Project 3 = Rec Room / Cost = $15,000
- Cynder block construction
- Basic design with average materials
- Drop ceiling
- About 500 sq. ft of space
- Will have 0.5 bath
- The square footage and bath technically can’t be adverstised as living space without a egress window, even with that it is still denoted as “below” grade
Considering the given details curious why one might think one is better than the other. Right now I’m thinking the rec room would be the best bang for the buck as far as usability BUT for resale I think the added 0.5 bath on the 1st level is best. I just don’t know how people would react to putting their shoes and coats in a closet in a kitchen (even though it would be directly around the corner from the main entry.
A: To me I find this question hard to answer. The drop ceiling with can lights is good. I would like to see a whole bath room even though it won’t used but it is a good selling point. A fourth bedroom is a great selling point. I see in project one your 4 to 5 feet off of lot line, I would check with building codes as most of the lot limits are 6 feet for single story and 10 feet for 2 story. Ceiling fans are also good.
Instead of a wider garage how about a longer one and you will have to back out a car to get out your snow blower.
