Quality Construction Management

Q: What is the importance of quality management?
that contribute to successful execution of projects.
What happen if an architect fails to manage quality aspect in his construction (building) project?

A: In a nutshell if you don’t manage properly your staff will lose respect and wont work or respect there job. It’s easy nowadays to suffer because of poor management because companies are so big they get lost in the blame.
My solution, if your a manager, do your job to your best ability and don’t push blame, try to be fair and hard and remember you goto work to work not make friends.

Q: Can you describe a true accident? One where there is no way to hold someone accountable?
(Natural disasters are not accidents)

I believe:
There is no such thing as an accident. If an “accident” is presented with sufficient background, it can always be shown, in the chain of events that somebody somewhere made a mistake that directly contributed to the “accident”. Somewhere a mistake was made, whether it is operator error in a vehicle crash or poor quality management while inspecting the construction of the brake system installed on that vehicle that failed. Someone somewhere is responsible for that accident.
BDZot – That falls under the natural disaster umbrella.
john w – I strongly recommend you read Tribes over at:

Especailly:
There are some things my Tribe is not good at at all. My Tribe doesn’t make excuses. My Tribe will analyze failure and assign blame, but that is to make sure that we do better next time, and we never, ever waste valuable energy and time doing so while people are still in danger. My Tribe says, and in their heart completely believes that it’s the other guy that’s the hero. My Tribe does not believe that a single Man can cause, prevent or steer Hurricanes, and my Tribe does not and has never made someone else responsible for their own safety, and that of their loved ones.
jeeper_peeper321 – you bring up great points & I respect what you state but, I must disagree. I have pondered your points before.

I grew up in both Wyoming and Colorado. I am thoroughly familiar with “black ice” and its ability to catch you unawares. With experience you learn where it occurs, usually in shadowy areas such as in a mountain or building shadow. Learning this and remaining aware can prevent “accidents”. Also good studded snow tires will help.

Ice under snow? I have driven on it 100 times but, I never had an “accident” because I was cautious and had snow tires on my vehicle or I stayed home & didn’t drive. I prevented “accidents” others didn’t & had “accidents” but, they were all preventable.
I spent 5 years onboard a US Navy ship. Any & all “accidents” which occurred were preventable. I ran the same reports you refer to in the capacity of a factory sup. There was always a cause, human error somewhere. Mechanical failure? That’s what routine maintenance is for. Quality inspections looking for rust or joint weakness can interrupt pending failure.

A: A raccoon chewed my brake lines once, and I couldn’t stop and hit a garbage can. A raccoon is not someone, but it was the cause. I blame it. I don’t know if you can call it a natural disaster, those bastards are smart. I bet he did it so he could get at the garbage in the can.

Q: is contstruction management a good degree to obtain?
what jobs are out there for this degree, is it worth it? salary good? quality of life good as a construction manager

A: It can pay well, but usually the hours are very long and youre on salary. And get used to nasty things written about you on the portapotty walls on the jobsite! It’s no desk job that’s for sure. Lots of deadlines and lots of stress

Q: Conservatives/Liberals – which tribe do you belong to?
I asked this question – Can you describe a true accident? One where there is no way to hold someone accountable? Here: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20070816071211AAQfJWq&r=w

I believe:

An individual nicknamed john w answered thusly: It is just that kind of thinking that is destroying our country and the world in general!

Clarification – I am not questioning as to whether you are a liberal or a conservative. I am questioning as to whether you belong to the tribe which lays blame where blame should be lain or to the tribe that makes excuses.

Q: What is “project management” all about ?
Is it “crisis management”?

I was following reports in the media about a new construction submarine computerization.

There were various companies involved.

I read that ASC wrote a letter to Rockwell in 1993, telling Rockwell it was running late.

So ASC was doing some sort of “crisis management” as it saw it. But wouldn’t that be a good way to sink the project ?
(Up till then Rockwell was sparing no effort to ensure absolute success. ASC effectively steps up and acts as a crisis manager.)

I read that a “Reliability Improvement Plan”, that Don Cabral of Rockwell had devised, was wound back or shelved. On whose orders would that have been ?

Was that a direct result of the ASC letter ?

Is “project management” sometimes a euphemism for “crisis management”, and very poor quality crisis mangement, at that ?

Dare one ask who put ASC up to writing the letter ?
To Life Irony,
Thanks. Terrific explanation.

A: “project management” is about planning and control.
Planning – make plan for the project – resources, time.
Control – ensure the plan are follow properly so the project can complete in time.

“crisis management” is part of Control. It is like fire fighting.
Things that happen that are not in the plan that need to be solved so that the plan can proceed smoothly.

Q: Does my business have a chance of getting off the ground and flourishing?
My Busniess makes Skateboard Decks with high quality materials at an amazingly low price. (Normally decks are $60 each, ours are same quality at $50 each) We have a great business name, Rage Skateboard Projects, and we’re already working on a skate team. We’ve planned out exactly how it will run and have had a financial advisor check us out and we sorted out our finances. If we sell 42% of our product or more we’ll be making enough profit to continue to make more skateboard decks. We have a website, at this link www.freewebs.com/rageskateprojects/

The company will be started as soon as I go through college in Colorado where I’ll learn business management, marketing, and skateboard design/manufacturing.

We have solid data on board construction and design. So does anyone think we’ll be successful? If you have any tips on where I can have Business Cards made that’d be cool and any help on advertising and marketing would be awesome!

A: Sounds very well-thought-out; definitely more-so than most ventures. Play around with some of your graphics software and print your own cards initially, then look for a printer who can do something really eye-catching for you, like the see-thru acrylic ones, or ones in the shape of a skateboard deck. Good luck!

Q: On the Collins project was the project manager a professional in the field of project management. ?
< The project manager gives the appearance of mucking up the system.

He introduces mutations to each subsystem, thereby making the system more robust.

A/by Wes/ The project manager is expected to do whatever it takes to make a product work (I.e. Make the company money. And if they have to bend the system to make this happen, then so be it.

A/by d_r_siva/ A project manager is a professional in the field of project management. Project managers can have the responsibility of the planning, execution, and closing of any project, typically relating to construction industry, architecture, computer networking, telecommunications or software development.

Many other fields in the production, design and service industries also have project managers.

A project manager is the person accountable for accomplishing the stated project objectives. Key project management responsibilities include creating clear and attainable project objectives, building the project requirements, and managing the triple constraint for projects, which are; cost, time, and quality (also known as scope).

A project manager is often a client representative and has to determine and implement the exact needs of the client, based on knowledge of the firm they are representing. The ability to adapt to the various internal procedures of the contracting party, and to form close links with the nominated representatives, is essential in ensuring that the key issues of cost, time, quality and above all, client satisfaction, can be realized.

Q: I need help with Water and Air Pollution?
I need help indentifying various ways to reduce the forms of pollution that have been identified. Determine whcih approach would be most feasible in the community.

Water and Air Analysis of Home
Living in a small town where the major businesses are the local supermarket and the Dairy Queen restaurant, the people of Cooper, TX, may not believe there is a need to be concerned with pollution forms the water and air. Since this is a small town, there are limits to the type of monitoring of pollutants available. When people think of the word pollution, they associate it with chemical factories, manufacture companies, and waste management businesses. Pollution in the water and air can still exist in a community without the reality of these types of companies. With limited tracking methods for pollutants in this community, there are potential risks that the community needs to become aware of.
There are not any industrial companies, but farming is a chief source of income for the town. Smog and soot are not high factors for reducing the air quality of the town. “According to research conducted by Scoreboard.com, Cooper ranks amount the cleaner 30% of all counties in the United States in terms of pm-10 emissions” (Scoreboard.com ). Fugitive dust from road traffic and construction are the leading containments for decreasing air quality. In rural communities, while commercial waste management companies pick up trash on a weekly and bi-weekly basis, open burning of trash is very common. Wildfires and open trash burning represent half of the town’s air pollution sources. There have not been any harmful effects from air pollutants detected or linked to causing illness, diseases, or cancer. The economy is affected when open burning gets out of control and results in wildfires. There is only a volunteer fire department that consists of volunteers from surrounding communities in the county.
There are two different entities that provide water to the town. The local water company supplies people who live inside the city limits, and the county supplies water to the people who live outside of the city limits. Cooper uses rivers, streams, creeks, and lakes for water usage. Cooper also receives water from a watershed, Sulphur Headwaters, located in the county. (Scoreboard.com 1999) The Sulphur and South Sulphur River and the Big Creek Lake, two of Cooper’s water reservoirs, did not meet all requirements for certifying the safety of the water. The county is required to test the water for over 97 containments and notify the community in writing with an annual report. The report lists tests for lead and copper, total organic carbon, cryptosporidium, and coliform. “As of 2006, Turbidity was found as a result of soil runoff. While it does not have any health effects, it can disrupt disinfection and provide a medium for microbial growth that can cause nausea, cramps, diarrhea, and headaches.” (Delta County MUD 2006)
The community of Cooper may not have to worry themselves with smog in the air or stock up on bottle water, but they do need to be aware of potential effects from the air and water. Elderly, infants, cancer patients and others with immune problems are vulnerable to contaminants. By staying alert of the risks of water and air pollutants and how they are introduced into the atmosphere, will help to maintain a safe environment and decrease illnesses.

A: 1 – The town/county or local water association can install a treatment plant to remove the Suspended solids from the water.

Otherwise, you, as either a business owner or homeowner would do well to install a carbon filtration system on the water coming into your home/business to remove said contaminants.

2 – The county can set aside some land for a commercial class 1 landfill to eliminate the burning of debris

Q: Any Sugguestions?? Help please?
Planning, organizing, leading and controlling functions can be applied to any level within the management hierarchy. Let’s take a brief look at the managers employed at Joe’s Steel Corporation:

Joe’s Steel Corporation is a company that fabricates a variety of industrial steel products. They are located in the Midwest and cater to regional construction needs. The company employs three primary managers. Joe Smith is the second generation CEO for the corporation. He has the final authority on all decisions regarding the direction of the corporation. Larry Haley maintains the position of plant supervisor. He ensures that customers receive satisfactory service and quality steel products. He is also involved in purchasing, budgeting, accounting, and personnel work. In addition, Sondra Ray manages the steel production line. She handles individual employee work assignments and performance as well as monitoring safety requirements.

Question 1

Select one of the levels of management referenced above and discuss how planning, organizing, leading and controlling could be applied to that level of management. Be sure to define each function and provide examples of how that function is applied to the specific level of management chosen.
Please heLp!!!

A: Larry Haley
planning:
In re: to purchasing he needs to ensure that he has the right qty of materials on hand all the time – too much and he can go over budget, too little and he can run short and not have enough to meet the customer needs.
in re: to personnel he will need to ensure that he is fully staffed at the proper times – staff too little and again, run short and are unable to satisfy demands – and then have to blow the budget by working overtime. Staff too much and lose productivity bcz you have more people than work requires (so people stand around and you have to send people home/lay them off)

Organizing – he would be required to make certain that his people needs match the work flow and that the people deliver the needed output to meet the goals set by the CEO.

His role as a leader is to keep the team motivated and focused so that the goals are met.

If he misses his mark on any of these, he runs the risk of overspending and decreasing the profit line of the business.

Hope that helps.
