Q: Who has seen T Boone Pickens Energy Plan?
He says “I’ve been an oil man all my life, but this is one emergency we can’t drill our way out of. But if we create a new renewable energy network, we can break our addiction to foreign oil”.
Doesn’t this offer more promise than off shore drilling?
http://www.pickensplan.com/
suthrngal: The plan is to use Natural Gas for cars not wind power. Also, Pickens clearly shows that the will never be able to satisfy US demand with domestic oil resources.

A: People have been driving cars and trucks powered by natural gas for almost 50 years now, yet no one is willing to stand up for this fuel except T. Boone.

Granted that Methane (the primary gas in natural gas) is a bit more hard to contain, but we’ve been lugging tanks of propane around for decades now in the backs of our wagons and trucks.

The technology is in production. We just need to get real about using it. Honda has a natural gas Civic sedan for sale today. Others have them as options. City fleets including buses run off of it.

And as for solar and wind, ever hear of co-generation? You sell the energy created to industries that are always in need of of electricity and they’ll use it for their plants.

People have to stop making excuses and do something now. Anything we can do to end our importation of foreign oil is long overdue.

You may hate the messenger, but T.Boone knows the marketplace. If he makes a profit, more power to him. That’s more than what Bush and his supporters have done in 8 years!

Q: What do you think of T. Boone Pickens plan for alternative energy ?
he is trying a quick buck or it is a genuine plan to energy independence.

http://www.pickensplan.com/

“I’ve been an oil man all my life, but this is one emergency we can’t drill our way out of. But if we create a new renewable energy network, we can break our addiction to foreign oil.”

Fool me again shame on you ?

A: I believe there must be a profit in it for him.

Q: Is this the answer to renewable energy concerns?
To sort out all the problems about where to situate wind farms, can we not just put a small wind turbine on top of each electricity pole? The electricity generated can be put into the wires and transported round the network.

Green solution. Done.

A: I agree with Bill nearly 100%. You are able to put power back onto the grid but it is very costly and depends on where you plan on putting these turbines. If you plan on putting them on top of these poles in the middle of nowhere, you are most likely looking at sub-transmission, or maybe even transmission lines that are 69kV and up. The small amount of added amperage onto the grid would not be able to warrant the integration…at all.

It is easier to have a “generating farm” and have a mass transmission line merge at a switching station. The individual small turbines do not produce enough energy solely in order to justify the costs of the technology needed to integrate into the grid. The turbines spin so slow they do not produce power at 60hz so you need to take it to a rectifier then to an inverter to produce the proper power at the proper frequency.

Their is also a lot of issues with the turbines producing a lot of VArs and harmonics on the circuits. The mitigation technology is very expensive so you are better off bulking up on these stations. I am trying to give you the ultra-abridged version…

Q: Why some americans are against global warming, renewable energy and immigration reform.?
Why some americans oppose to the same block of issues. I observed entire internet Macro Networks on the internet, chain of radio stations, some mayor tv corporations that opose systematically to Renewable Energy, Immigration Reform, Global Warming, Health Care for Everybody and the theory of ‘The Expanding Earth’.

A: When they prove that Global warming can be linked to man then and only then will I believe it. I’m not against renewable energy, I just want to be able to afford other things while it’s being developed. Immigration reform is also okay, Illegal aliens and amnesty is not. You want health care for everyone, then YOU pay for it, I don’t want to support you.

Q: What’s the best way to network while in College? I want to do something in Science.?
Everyone always says, “it’s not how smart you are, it’s who you know.” I would hope to get into the Space or Renewable energy fields. It has to be something technical.

A: Spend your summers doing REUs (research experience for undergraduates). They offer them at many universities, you don’t have to stay at your own, and in government labs and NASA. They’ll give you an adviser in the field for the summer, and maybe even send you to a conference, which can be great for networking.

Q: Wind with solar energy in Canada?
Hi
I am doing a project about a renewable energy.well my topic is BioOli energy (it is a fuel). anyway i am discussing this type of energy and its feasibility in Peace Region of BC with a 230 kV transmission main nearby and how likely it is to feed this energy to a network grid……to sum it up, I have completed all my research and stuff, however, the only part i am stuck at is that i have to compare this with other suitable types of renewable technologies like solar and wind in that area. This should include comparison of the maintenance/installation costs, and systems’ efficiency.

I appreciate if any one, who is familiar with this types of energy source in Peace Region of BC, could help me.

A: B.C. has alot of hydro-eletric dams to you might want to examine these too. Not really sure about wind power up there. You might want to do some research on the wind fields in southern Alberta (im sure there has been cost analysis done on these.) I don’t think solar power is very feasible up there, with the long, dark, cloudy winters.

Q: Does Carbon offsetting have a real impact?
I joined a social network at COzero.net to make a public record of my fight against climate change. I calculated my carbon footprint and offsetted it by investing in renewable energy.

A: Please read the referenced Wikipedia article of carbon offsetting carefully and critically, paying special attention to the Controversies section.

In my opinion the “sale of indulgences” criticism is reason enough for rejection of the entire carbon offsetting scheme. Those who purchase offsets can ease their conscience without actually doing a single thing to reduce their “carbon footprint”. While conscientious individuals can do something to reduce their carbon footprint, they are limited by their dependence on external energy suppliers. Corporations are notorious for accepting schemes like carbon offsetting as “cost of doing business”, and actually planning to increase their CO2 emissions using the justification that they are paying “someone else” to counteract such increases.

Utilizing part of Wikipedia’s outline, here are some brief considerations of offsets:

2 Sources of Carbon Offsets
2.1 Renewable energy — All renewable energy sources have a high initial cost and some have high maintenance costs, both of which can be uses as a measure of CO2 emissions generated in hardware production.
Wind Power — There is an as yet uninvestigated environmental effect from extracting energy from wind.
Hydroelectric — Environmental groups have been crusading for decades to destroy dams because of their effects on the environment.
Solar — Consideration of the hazards involved in solar cells can be terrifying, and all solar units not mounted on existing buildings rob local plant life of necessary sunlight, making them less efficient in CO2-to-O2 conversion.
Biofuels — These merely substitute one form of CO2 generation with another, with the effects that more CO2 is generated by the processing required, and food supply sources are reduced.
Nuclear — Construction of fission power plants was curtailed decades ago in the US due to real and imagined fears of radiation and thermal environmental contamination. We have still not solved the problem of harnessing fusion processes, though some progress has been made.
Geothermal — exceedingly expensive for all but local domestic use, and very low efficiency. Efforts to increase efficiency by drilling deeper for higher temperatures are even more expensive and introduce a possibility of releasing magma.
Wave Energy — The only drawbacks at this time seem to be expense and development of required technologies.
Hydrogen as a fuel — This is inherently infeasible without nuclear power. Combustion of 1 gram of H2 produces 9 grams of water vapor, a greenhouse gas that is much neglected in climate discussions. At any given time there is 20 to 80 times as much water vapor in the atmosphere as CO2.
Note that none of these renewable sources are truly renewable.
2.2 Methane collection and combustion
CH4 + 2O2 → CO2 + 2H2O
Burning 1 metric ton of methane releases 2.75 metric tons of CO2 (and 2.25 metric tons of H2O). From CO2 emissions alone it can be seen that this process is blatantly counterproductive.
2.3 Energy efficiency
Fuel cells for motive power are 2-5 times as efficient as internal combustion engines on all fuels tried, but, again, beware of initial cost. Fluorescent lighting, while considerably more efficient than incandescent, introduces mercury and phosphors, both potentially deadly into home environments. High R-factor insulations are desirable, but again, costly.
2.4 Destruction of industrial pollutants — another procedure with potentially deadlier consequences than original hazards, again coupled with increasing the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere.
2.5 Land use, land-use change and forestry
Reforestation and avoiding further deforestation are both desirable and admirable, but even plants considered to be weeds extract CO2 from the atmosphere. Afforestation needs to be considered carefully before being implemented (see again Controversies). Savannas and parries have sustained life for eons.

Yeah, I know I’m not going to bother correcting it. It gives libs something to attack instead of answering question.

A: part of it was all about getting votes and the other part was his ego actually believing that he is some sort of superman.

Q: Democrats: If Hillary’s not nominated, How about John Edwards?
Her’s an email I’ve just received:

Dear friend,
My name is John Land. I’m proud to serve as the Democratic Leader in the State Senate of South Carolina. I want to talk to you about how, you, I and John Edwards are going to revitalize rural America and change the political map.

You know how it goes: every year, Republicans pump in millions of dollars to push hot-button issues to frighten and divide rural voters, while the real problems we face go totally unaddressed. And those problems are only getting worse—jobs fleeing overseas, thriving communities reduced to ghost towns, and local farmers finding it harder and harder just to make ends meet.

I support John Edwards because he’s the first national candidate in years who really takes rural America seriously—and he’s got a solid, bold plan to help turn things around. I know John speaks from the heart about the issues that affect my community—because this is his community too. He grew up here, and people in places like South Carolina will listen to someone who actually understands what life here is all about.

So what can we do to change the map? We can help John’s campaign spread the word. I know that when rural voters learn about who John is and what he would actually do, even the reddest counties will start to turn blue. That’s why I just donated $100 bucks to help fund John’s outreach to rural voters. Now, I’m asking you to join me by chipping in whatever you can afford at:

www.johnedwards.com/changethemap

Last week John launched his national rural outreach effort right here in SC. He was greeted by overflow crowds in small rural diners, many of whom drove great distances to finally have a conversation with a national leader who is ready to fight for the rural way of life.

You can read John’s full plan on the website, but here’s the highlights of what the plan would do:
·Restore economic fairness to rural America by helping small businesses thrive and grow.
·Create a new energy economy in rural America by establishing the New Energy Economy Fund to jumpstart renewable energies.
·Create fairness for family farmers by supporting strong antitrust enforcement, capping farm subsidies for corporate farms and other reforms.
·Strengthen rural schools by improving pay for teachers in rural and other hard-to-staff schools.
·Improve health care in rural America by rewriting the unfair Medicare and Medicaid funding formulas, covering the 9 million uninsured rural Americans and establishing a nationwide network of public clinics and hospitals.
·Rid rural America of methamphetamines by improving enforcement, restricting key ingredients and expanding programs that successfully treat addicts.
We’ve seen too many elections where Republicans dominate rural states only to let rural people down. In John Edwards, we have a candidate and a plan that will finally end that cycle and change politics in America forever—but only if we all help out.

Like I said, I just kicked in $100 to help John’s campaign get their message to rural voters, and I really hope you’ll join me. Please pitch in what you can today, at:

www.johnedwards.com/changethemap

Thanks for standing with rural America, and thanks for changing the map.

Sincerely,

–John Land
April 23rd, 2007

P.S. If you chip in $50 or more, you’ll receive a free advance copy of the not-yet-released CD “Moneyland”. “Moneyland” tells the story of the plight of rural America, through a collection of recordings, both old and new, from legendary country and bluegrass recording artists, including: The Del McCoury Band, Merle Haggard, Welch, Marty Stuart, Emmylou Harris, Bruce Hornsby & the Fairfield Four, Mac Wiseman, Patty Loveless, and more.

You can hear clips of some of the songs from “Moneyland” here: www.johnedwards.com/changethemap

A: Thanks for posting all of this information. I think I’ll start looking at John Edward’s campaign closer now. I was for Obama, but Edwards looks pretty good. Thanks!

A: Me thinks the question is a little hard??
I would go with Mr.X personally.
Minimum Wage IS really really low.

Q: Anyone else really fed up with this turd country..?
Do we do anything right..? Education crap, Wages crap, liberties removed, warmongering government, security services that execute terrorist/tourists (well both beign with T give em a break), police crap – can’t even stop kids who post videos of themselves on you tube with guns…. NHS-completely crap beyond all recognition.. Industry – What industry..? Food – British resaurants.. know any where you live..? Protesting – Even the extremist groups look like a flock of fluffy of sheep when the authorities turn up… Minimum wage – too low to own a house disaffected work force – solution bring in more people to work on less than min wage! Petrol prices-Through the roof – Thought we occupied an Oil rich country..? Rail network – Crap overpriced..? Roads- Crappy but plenty of money for speed bumps and cameras.. Energy – Prices extorionate – Renewable energy programme. so far some crazy farmer who thinks sheep like windmills.

So is there anything good about this country.?
Look we have had the old its worse in other places crap forced down our throats long enough thank you… It’s not an excuse to accept our governments failure.. Its just a smoke screen tactic to distract us from the fact our government is a bunch of puppets with bankers and corporate fat cats pulling the strings. When things decline you protest.. Dissent is the highest form of Patriotism

A: “Even the extremist groups look like a flock of fluffy sheep….” —Tell me about it! Even ARAs (Animal Rights Activists) are getting soft. Not that spray painting labs doesn’t have it’s usefulness. But…

Q: What do you think of Sen. Obama’s call for expanded National Service?
Sen. Obama calls for expanded National Service

«Through service, I found a community that embraced me, citizenship that was meaningful, the direction I’d been seeking». Would you call this patriotism?

For Sen. Barack Obama, the answer is “yes”. To win over voters in Republican areas, and to defend his love for the country, he is turning to his own experience after college as a community organizer explaining that patriotism, today, means to be part of the change, serving your contry.

On July 2, exhorting Americans «to step into the strong current of history and volunteer for service to their country» Obama promised to expand opportunities for those accepting his challenge expanding the national service plan he had first detailed in December.

The plan would cost an estimated $3.5 billion annually and would increase AmeriCorps members by 250,000, double the Peace Corps by 2011, create an Energy Corps for renewable-energy and environmental projects, and expand the Foreign Service. Additionally, a Social Investment Fund Network would support the nonprofit world, and veterans would be tapped to help other veterans find jobs.

A: Very promising
